A Darlaston saddle tree maker is set for further growth after receiving a second funding boost from Walsall Business Support.

Birchwood Saddle Trees received a £15,000 donation from Walsall Business Support to help grow the business following an £8,000 donation 18 months ago.

The £15,000 funding boost will allow the business to purchase new, energy efficiency machinery, install heating and replace windows at the factory.

Since the initial funding of £8,000 in November 2023, the business has grown steadily, doubling its turnover and securing international customers in France, North America, and Japan.

Established in 2023 by owners Adam Cook and Richard Chatfield, Birchwood Saddle Trees produces bespoke, hand- crafted saddle trees, a wooden structure that forms the foundation of a horse saddle.

It is hoped that the equipment and factory upgrade will allow the business to grow further, with capacity to increase the workforce.

Formed by leading local business figures to distribute funds collected from the legacy of Walsall Chamber of Commerce, Walsall Business Support provides grants to applicants who want funding for projects to enhance business life in the borough.

Co-owner Adam Cook commented “We can’t thank Walsall Business Support enough for believing in our business and supporting us with a second round of funding.

“The industry has been suffering but we are steadily growing and have doubled turnover in the last two years.

“When we started the business, we were operating second hand equipment with no heating in the factory. The funding will allow us to purchase new machinery, install heating and replacement windows. Not only will this increase efficiencies but allow us to take on more customers.

“As the business grows, we hope to take on more employees too, passing on vital skills to the next generation of saddle tree makers.”

Walsall Business Support board member Adam Howell added: “Birchwood Saddle Trees are a thriving business, and we are delighted to be able to support them again.

“It’s great to hear how the business has grown over the last 18 months and their plans for expansion going forward.

“Our aim is to offer grants for businesses looking to bring growth, skills and employment to the borough of Walsall.”
