A long-established family shoe repair business in Walsall is preparing for its next chapter after receiving a £4,500 grant from Walsall Business Support (WBS) to help it relocate and continue serving the community.

Park Place Shoe Repairs has been part of the town for more than 40 years, starting as a small market-stall repair service before expanding to offer key cutting, watch repairs, engraving, trophy supply, bag repairs and leatherwork.

Owner Kishor Chauhan honed his craft thanks to his father, who learned about repairing shoes in Kenya. The business first heard about WBS through Walsall Council, who signposted support for traders affected by ongoing town centre refurbishment works.

“We applied because we’re having to move premises again due to the refurbishment,” said Kishor. “We had already recently relocated from our previous premises that we traded from for over 30 years after the centre closed down following COVID. It’s been an expensive time for the business, so this help really makes a huge difference to us.”

WBS awarded Park Place £4,500, helping them manage the cost of the move and the setup of a new unit, including fitting equipment and covering the essential costs that come with relocating.

For a small business that relies on continuity and local footfall, the grant provides important stability during a period of uncertainty.

“The grant will mainly help us cover the costs of moving – things like setting up the new unit and making sure our equipment is fitted properly,” he said. “It takes the pressure off and helps us stay open while everything is changing around us.”

Walsall Business Support board member, Angela Henderson, said: “Small, family-run independents like Park Place are part of the fabric of Walsall. We are so pleased to support a business that has served the community for over 40 years and continues to provide valuable local services.”

The business’s long-term customers – many of whom have been visiting for decades – remain central to its plans.

“We’ve grown our business by adapting to what local customers need, and we’ve always taken pride in helping the community,” added Kishor. “Our plans are to stay in Walsall, keep serving the community, and keep the family business going.”
